We are looking for a scholar of exceptional ability to join our internationally renowned History Department as Assistant Professor of History in the period c.900-c.1250 (CE), with a focus on the Islamic world (including North Africa, Sicily and al-Andalus, the Levant, the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, Khorosan and northern India). We are particularly keen to hear from candidates whose work will complement and expand the current strengths of the department. Applications from historians whose research establishes links between several geographic regions or adopt a cross-cultural approach within the Islamic world and with neighboring cultures, and who share the department’s commitment to decolonize the program, are therefore particularly encouraged.

The Department of History enjoys an exceptional and long-established reputation in the medieval field and today has one of the largest concentrations of scholars of the time in the country. Our research covers the entire period from the end of the Roman Empire to the 16th century, spanning across and far beyond medieval Europe. The department is closely involved in the Interdisciplinary Institute for Medieval and Modern Studies, which brings together colleagues from across the University. Our Medievalists maintain close ties with Durham’s Interdisciplinary Centers for Visual Arts and Cultures, Catholic Studies, Ancient and Medieval Philosophy, and for the Study of the Ancient Mediterranean and the Near East. We also have close links with the departments of Classical and Ancient History, Theology and Religion, English Studies and with the School of Modern Languages ​​and Cultures (especially with Arabic, Spanish, Italian , French and German).

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to tap into Durham’s exceptional and diverse resources for the study of pre-modern history, which include the Durham Cathedral and University manuscript collections (which are part of the digitization project of the priory library), the Priory Archives cathedral and the Oriental Museum collections.
