Duolingo has created a course in “High Valyrian”, the language of the dragon from Game of Thrones

– fair use.

Having already thrilled Trekkie fans with their Klingon language lesson from Star Trek, language-learning app Duolingo has created a lesson in “High Valyrian,” the magical dragon tongue from HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Spoken by many characters, including star Emelia Clark as “Mother of Dragons,” Daenerys Targaryen, the language course was created in partnership with HBO in time for the spin-off prequel series.

With over 150 additional words included in the recent course update, this is by far the quickest way to work your way through a Comic Con Game of Thrones panel, or watch the show just in case. your TV’s resolution would be messed up and the subtitles appear below screen level.

This is probably one of the only language courses anyone will actually complete on Duolingo, but it’s not all gibberish, it was created by David Peterson, whose career was built inventing languages fictitious for series like the Thor movies, Dune and others.

When he teamed up with George RR Martin, he had just two phrases to start with, “all men must die” and “all men must serve”. From there, Peterson created over 2,000 words and organized them into a course on Duolingo.

It’s a different experience learning a language that was invented a few years ago, and fans of the show or the books will surely be delighted.
