Duolingo reveals ‘most phrase in 2021’ and launches second global language report

Year-end campaign showcases the most popular language courses, phrases and reasons people use the world’s leading mobile language learning platform
PITTSBURGH, December 06, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Duolingo (NASDAQ: DUOL), the world’s No.1 language learning platform, this week revealed the “2021 most phrase” that is “I am mentally exhausted “. Duolingo chose this phrase, found in his Japanese class, to reflect the overall tone and sentiment of the year in which we have witnessed record-breaking exhaustion and fatigue brought on by the ongoing pandemic.
Along with the phrase “Most 2021 Phrase,” Duolingo also launched the company’s second global program. Language report, which examines the latest language trends and learner behaviors based on data from over 500 million Duolingo learners around the world who have downloaded the app. In 2021, more than 700 million hours were spent learning on Duolingo with nearly 10 billion lessons completed and 15 billion words learned. Almost 25 million people around the world learned more than one language. This year’s results clearly show that learners continue to look to languages to build bridges with cultures and people, over distances we cannot yet cover in person – for now. The main findings reveal:
- Asian language learning soars – Japanese is the fastest growing language this year in the United States, Korean is also gaining popularity around the world.
- Family and heritage are the engines of language learning in the United States – The family suddenly moved beyond school and brain training to become the primary reason new learners in the United States study languages. Seventy percent of those who started learning a language during the pandemic say their learning is linked to family heritage, ancestry or culture, according to a recent survey conducted in conjunction with the Duolingo 2021 language report.
- Spanish is still in the lead – The five most learned languages on Duolingo this year in the United States are Spanish, English, French, Japanese and German.
“We have seen a record growth in new language learners in 2020, fueled by the pandemic, and we are now able to share information on how these models have evolved this year,” said Cindy Blanco, Senior Scientist in training. “One of the most interesting trends we’ve seen this year has been the increase in the number of learners who are studying a language in order to connect with their families. It’s exciting to see people using the language as a way to reconnect across cultures and relationships.
In addition, Duolingo is rolling out a new Year in Review experience that provides an in-depth visualization of each user’s activity, featuring eight different types of learners based on various factors including hours spent learning, number of lessons they’ve learned. a learner has tracked, what time a learner tends to practice, and more.
“This year, we are rolling out personalized learning styles that give our learners a unique perspective on their learning habits, and we hope this will inspire them to set new language learning goals for 2022,” said declared Blanco.
The Year in Review experience is available to all Duolingo learners who have completed at least 10 lessons in 2021. Duolingo learners can see their personalized Year in Review snapshot in the app and can share their learner style directly on networks social.
