The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) celebrated European Day of Languages ââ2021, a close cooperation between the Language Center of the Institute of Translation and Interpretation (TII- LC), the European Union Pole of National Institutes of Culture in Doha, French Institute of Qatar and French Embassy.
In keeping with the intention of the day, a special event held Sunday at Penrose House, Education City, brought together language enthusiasts to celebrate the importance of linguistic diversity in building cultural bonds and understanding.
With the aim of encouraging language learning in one of the various languages ââoffered, TII-LC organized group introductory sessions with the centre’s professional instructors in Arabic and various European languages. These included English, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
Jointly launched by the National Institutes for Culture of the European Union, the European Day of Languages ââhas been celebrated every year since 2001 to promote Europe’s linguistic diversity and encourage lifelong language learning on the multilingual continent. Plurilingualism is seen as a tool to achieve better intercultural understanding and a key part of the rich cultural heritage of the continent.
Dr Nima Nazari, Director of the Language Center at TII, said: âOur celebration of European Day of Languages ââhas been a wonderful expression of the strong cultural ties between Qatar and Europe. Amidst diversity, language is a powerful tool for engaging us, achieving cultural understanding and advancing the economic and social goals of our societies.
âIn today’s globalized world, learning a foreign language has never been more valuable or important. The ability to express ourselves and to understand others enables a dynamic exchange of ideas and social interaction that strengthens the fabric of our diverse societies. At TII, it is not only mastering the language we adopt in our immersive teaching approach, but the entire cultural context. In this way, our language programs not only encourage a lifelong love for languages, but they open the door to new experiences and opportunities.
The TII Language Center, part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences of HBKU, regularly organizes events related to its language learning programs and the different cultures represented.
