Unions approached Additional Chief Transport Secretary Ashish Kumar Singh on Thursday demanding that the base taxi fare be increased by ??2 to ??27.
The Maharashtra government in February increased the fare for black and yellow autorickshaws and taxis in the city. The city’s minimum fare for black and yellow taxis is now ??25 instead of ??22 earlier.
“Due to the increase in ??5.56 of the price of CNG, taxi operators suffer a loss of ??60 per day. The price of CNG has risen from ??51 to ??54 and again after 10 days the price was increased to ??57.54, â€said a statement from the Mumbai Taxi Union which counts the city’s maximum number of taxi drivers as members.
The union also threatened to go on strike if CNG prices rose further. “We will talk to our members and if the prices go up then we will go on strike. We are also discussing internally with people from the transport fraternity on what action can be taken, â€said AL Quadros, leader of Mumbai Taximen’s Union.
Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) announced Wednesday the price hike for CNG and domestic natural gas (PNG) from Thursday.
The price of CNG is now ??57.54 per kg and has been increased by ??2.30 per kg. Earlier on October 5, CNG prices were increased and were valued at ??54.57 per kg. Before that, CNG was priced at ??49.40 per kg in town.
