A student organizes a surf camp for young people

Mia Boggs, a junior at Cathedral Catholic High School, recently created and ran a “Sunshine Surf Camp” for children with special needs on the beach south of Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. She chose to be a mentor this year for the “Options Program”. Once a week, she mentors another teenager with Down syndrome. Mia intends to pursue a career in special education. A member of the CCHS varsity surf team, she came up with the idea of ​​combining helping children with special needs with her love of surfing. His surf camp hosted nine young people (with their parents) and helped them learn to surf and bodyboard, build sandcastles, connect and have fun on the beach. The association awards scholarships to 31 students

The North County African American Women’s Association recently awarded $ 38,950 in scholarships to 31 young women. “Our support for these students will allow them to make the future of our community leaders even brighter,” NCAAWA President Linda Berry said in a statement. The scholarships ranged from $ 500 to $ 2,500. Some of the recipients are graduating from high school and others are returning to university. Many are permanent researchers that the association has supported in the past. Although the association had to cancel its main fundraiser, The Gentleman’s Gourmet, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, donations from members, sponsors and other organizations supported the funding of the scholarship. They included Every Man Network, Watkins Manufacturing, Wells Fargo, Appley Foundation, Dr. Joi Blake and Family, North Island Credit Union, Blue Shield of California, Carolina Makowski, and Guild Mortgage. MiraCosta College Expands Dual Enrollment Program

A new dual enrollment program from MiraCosta College at Surfside Educational Academy in Oceanside shows how earning college credit for high school students can also lead to new professional skills and new employment. The partnership between Surfside Educational Academy and MiraCosta College began last year with a college-level career and life planning course. The success of this course led to the introduction to Hospitality Management, a three-unit class launched in the spring. Twenty-two students are enrolled in the class and are given priority for interview with Hyatt Hotels for positions at the recently opened Mission Pacific and Seabird Resort hotels in Oceanside. The number of students in the Oceanside Unified School District taking dual enrollment courses at MiraCosta has increased by almost 60% over the past four years to reach 411. Almost half of these students enroll at MiraCosta College after completing high school. Double and simultaneous registration allows high school students to take college-level courses and registration fees are waived. The Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation provides scholarships annually to high school students in North County for their talents in the performing arts, visual arts, and filmmaking. District Announces Biliteracy Seal Recipients

The Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District recently announced the recipients of this year’s Biliteracy Seal, an award given to students to recognize their proficiency in two languages ​​upon graduation. The district adopted the program in 2013. The seal encourages students to value and pursue literacy – defined not only as the ability to speak, read, and write in another language, but also the ability to understand the culture. Students receiving the honor are postgraduate graduates who have participated in the district’s bilingual program for four years or more in grades K-8; have completed at least two years of Spanish in high school and obtained at least a 3.0 GPA in the classes; have completed four years of English in high school and obtained at least a 3.0 GPA in the classes; and have an overall grade point average of 3.0 in high school.
