At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, some of the first deaths among Colorado frontline workers were employees at Walmart stores; in April 2020, an Aurora branch of the retail giant was linked to three deaths. Today, the death of a new Walmart worker offers heartbreaking proof that the dangers of the disease are far from over.
The latest report from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, released on October 6, reveals that the Walmart 3582 store, located at 1575 Space Center Drive in Colorado Springs, was officially designated as a COVID-19 outbreak on September 30 due to eleven staff cases and one staff member death.
The state health department’s standard for declaring an outbreak, revised in June, calls for two or more cases of COVID-19 among residents, staff, participants, and others related to a healthcare facility. health or correctional facility within fourteen days. All other locations must be associated with at least five confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 over two weeks before an outbreak is triggered.
The number of outbreaks listed on October 6 as under active investigation by the CDPHE is 458, up from 437 on September 29, when the previous roundup was published. And while the number of new or changed entries rose from 75 on September 29 to 67 on October 6, many of the latest outbreaks are larger than their predecessors, with double-digit infections more common.

This is especially true for K-12 schools, the category with the newest or most changed outbreaks: 29, one more than the 28 counted on September 29. Outbreaks with a significant number of cases include Laredo Elementary School in Arapahoe County (student cases), Cortez Middle School in Montezuma County (one personal case, eighteen student cases), Kruse Elementary School in the county de Larimer (one personal case, twenty student cases) and Firestone Charter Academy in County Weld (three personal cases, 21 student cases).
The second highest number of new outbreaks is in the health care category: 24 centers have joined the list, and 22 of them specialize in care for the elderly. Other notable outbreaks have occurred at four daycares, two coal mines in Moffat County (one has recorded a death), two cannabis retailers in Pueblo County and Andrew Wommack Ministries, a religious establishment that sued the Colorado State in September 2020 to hold an event despite an outbreak declared more than a few months earlier. The latest outbreak is now the organization’s third.
In fact, many places currently monitored by CDPHE have already experienced epidemics. Of the 67 new or amended outbreaks, 35 were previously on the list.
