CAPE TOWN – The Western Cape Transport Standing Committee has called an urgent meeting to deal with the continuing wave of violent attacks on long-distance buses.
The Intercape bus company, the police, the South African National Taxi Council and the Department of Community Safety and Police Oversight will brief members on Friday morning.
In April, Intercape said there had been more than 150 recorded violent events directed at the long-distance coach industry in the country in the space of 13 months.
The sector believes that rogue taxi associations are behind the attacks.
In the latest incident on Wednesday, two Intercape bus drivers were shot dead along the N2 near Nyanga and one of them was injured.
Over the weekend, a driver was shot and injured outside the Intercape depot at Airport Industria.
Ricardo Mackenzie, Western Cape Democratic Alliance (DA) Transport Spokesperson, said: “The ongoing violence has instilled fear among drivers and passengers. We welcome the Provincial Government’s interventions to call on the provincial traffic authority to closely monitor operations and remain alert to vehicles illegally stopping and demanding money from buses along Western Cape roads.”
